    Good product but a few things to look out for, May 14, 2014
    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
    This review is from: LevinTM Solar Panel Charger 6000mAh Rain/Dirt/Shockproof Dual USB Port Portable Charger Backup External Battery Power Pack for iPhone 5S 5C 5 4S 4, iPad Air, Other iPads, iPods(Apple Adapters not Included), Samsung Galaxy S5 S4, S3, S2, Note 3, Note 2, Most Kinds of Android Smart Phones and Tablets,Windows phone, Gopro Camera and More Other Devices (yellow)(Pls buy the authentic Branded items and turn down the knockoffs) (Wireless Phone Accessory)
    First things first: the solar panel…works! But slowly. Took 4-5 days (some sunny, some overcast) to fully charge. Seems reasonable given the size of the solar panel.

    Also, one of those days there was an enormous downpour…I thought this thing was ruined…non-responsive for at-least an hour. Then it was fine. Yay!

    Only reason I’m giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is that I’m questioning the capacity. My iPhone 5c has a ~1,500 mAh battery…and this thing says 5000mAh…so I should get at-least 3 full charges out of it. After two full charges (with phone in airplane mode), I’m down to one blinking light. Given that, I’ll be surprised if I get another full charge out of it (but I remain open-minded). Will update rating if warranted.

    Update: charger was basically dead after 2nd charge of iPhone 5c (got it from 1% to 4%). Again, phone was in airplane mode while charging. Seller contacted me after first review with all the song and dance about 25% loss due to various factors being normal. Okay. But here’s the thing: I got two full charges. No more; no less. Two times 1,530 is 3,060, which is about 60% of 5,000. So somewhere along the lime 40% of this capacity (not 25%) was “lost”. At this point 4 stars seems generous…but I’ll leave it there in the hopes that all other aspects of the charger live up to expectations.

    Oh, one other thing…the lightning adaptor came apart pretty soon after being put into use. It’s not broken or anything…just wasn’t glued together for some reason.

    Update: all of a sudden I am getting a message that this charger is not compatible with my iPhone and the charging is very sporadic. It’s going back. 🙁

    Another update: contacted pretty quickly by seller who is (unprompted) sending me a new one. The product may be hit or miss, but the customer service is exceptional. Seller really stand behinds the product.

    Final update: I took this with me on a 9 day backpacking trip. I kept my iPhone 5c in airplane mode the whole trip (just used it for pictures). Every day I used about 10% of the batter life (plus or minus) and every night I used this to charge it right back up again (so that there was “room” in the charger for more solar. I finished the 9 day trip…and this thing was still basically FULL (four lights when on). With regard to my first “update”, I’m pretty sure the “not compatible” message was due to the faulty adapter I mentioned in my initial review (it was, in fact, broken). When I used my adapter from Apple, the charger worked just fine. Be aware that you will only get two full iPhone 5 charges out of it (not 3 as the math would suggest); HOWEVER, over the course of several days, I can attest that you will have gained another full charge. I’m upgrading my review to 5 stars. Overall, this is a great product (and the company has demonstrated to me that they are committed to superior customer service).

    This review is from: LevinTM Solar Panel Charger 6000mAh Rain/Dirt/Shockproof Dual USB Port Portable Charger Backup External Battery Power Pack for iPhone 5S 5C 5 4S 4, iPad Air, Other iPads, iPods(Apple Adapters not Included), Samsung Galaxy S5 S4, S3, S2, Note 3, Note 2, Most Kinds of Android Smart Phones and Tablets,Windows phone, Gopro Camera and More Other Devices (yellow)(Pls buy the authentic Branded items and turn down the knockoffs) (Wireless Phone Accessory)
    I received this in yellow at no cost in exchange for writing a review. Here are my comments.

    1. I like the way this looks and feels. It’s relatively compact ( 5 1/2 x 2 7/8 x 1/2 inches) and has an attractive rugged plastic case that is supposed to be water resistant and shockproof and impervious to dirt.

    2. This is rated at 5000mAh and has dual 1A USB ports as well as a built in flashlight.

    3. Included is a micro USB charging cable along with both regular and lightning Apple adapter heads, plus a carabiner clip to carry this.

    4. There are four LED indicator lights to show the battery status. A green light comes on to indicate solar charging, and goes off when the unit is fully charged.

    Note: The directions state: “Solar charging only for emergency, please avoid prolonged exposure under the burning sun.” However, in response to my original 4 star review noting this limitation, the seller contacted me to say that the reference to “only for emergency” was to indicate that solar charging is slower than electrical charging, and that in fact this unit has been tested for 8 hours on a hiking trip in South China under a hot sun and worked fine. Accordingly I upgraded my review to 5 stars.

    Bottom line: I think this is great sport charger to bring to the beach, lake or pool. I am going on vacation to a hot sunny climate in a couple of weeks and will see if this lives up to the seller’s claim that it can endure hours in the hot sun.

    Update May 10, 2014: I left this out all afternoon to charge in the blazing hot sun at a hotel in Mexico where I went on vacation. It charged fine and also worked well afterwards. So I have confirmed that this can be left out for hours in a hot sun without any ill effect and will charge.

    Update May 31, 2014: When I travel I always use the flashlight on one of my power banks as a nightlight, which means it stays on from 8 to 10 hours a day. I was curious how quickly this unit would drain if I left the flashlight on. I was stunned at the results–but in a good way. The flashlight was on 24 hours a day for 7 straight days–and I still had 50% power left. I have much more powerful units that have drained more quickly. Putting aside that this will definitely be the unit I rely on for a nightlight when I travel, it’s good to know that in the event of a power failure I have a flashlight that will last more than enough time if I keep it fully charged.

    Update June 8, 2014: The flashlight has now been on for 15 straight days 24/7 and just now ran out of power. Pretty amazing.

    I keep it outside during the day, use to recharge my MP3 player at night, May 10, 2014

    I like the shape and the feel of this battery. The battery is 5.5″L x 2.75″W, and 0.5″ thick. It has a loop at the of the case and comes with carabiner so you can hang it on a branch or a backpack. Its weight is 5.3 oz. The charger has two ports. The ports are unlabelled but my current meter shows that they are both same and generate about 1A. This external battery has a built-in flash light. The flashlight is not bright but better than nothing in emergency. The battery is rated as 5000 mAh. Since some power during charging is lost to inefficiencies (such as heat) it will provide approximately 3750 mAh. I was able charge my phone with 3800mAh extended battery from almost empty to full.

    This package include a micro usb cable, and two tips: lightening connector and iPad connector. The tips work, however I prefer one piece cables because these tips are quite easy to loose.

    To test how whether proof this battery is I left it outside on the railing of my deck for 2 weeks. We had rain and sun, it got as cold as 35°F and as hot as 60°F over the two weeks. The charger continued to function. I was able to fully charge the battery from the sun. The battery can be charged from AC source as well.

    The charge level indicator is bright and easy to see. When the level of charge is low, the indicator starts to blink. It takes me 2 hours to recharge it from empty to 3 bars. I get to 4 bars by the end of the day, but have not been able to time exactly how long it takes so far – the few times we had many hours of sunny weather this spring I missed the exact time it went to 4 bars.

    How well did it charge my mobile devices? I tested Levin Solstar Samsung Nexus phone and iPad Mini. I tested several solar batteries over the past year, this external battery pack is not the fastest but performed respectably well. The speed of charging for both my Nexus phone and iPad Mini was a bit below average, but it was able to charge both devices.

    To help me compare different batteries to each other I use the same two tests on every port: a current monitor and a 10 minute charging test. This gives me specific numbers which allow me to do the comparison.

    I use Battery App by Elvison to determine how each device recognized the charging source. ‘AC’ status means the charging is at full charging rate. ‘USB’ status indicates charging at a lower charging rate. ‘Discharging’ status means that the charging rate is below the power that the device is consuming so it slows down the discharge rate but does not re-charge.

    ➨ Test Results:
    ======================

    ✔ Samsung Nexus phone
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Port 1: AC ~~~~ 4% change in charge in 10 minutes
    Current monitor: 0.83A / 4.90V
    Port 2: AC ~~~~ 3% change in charge in 10 minutes
    Current monitor: 0.73A / 4.85V
    ✔ iPad Mini
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Port 1: AC ~~~~ 2% change in charge in 10 minutes
    Current monitor: 0.87A / 4.87V
    Port 2: AC ~~~~ 1% change in charge in 10 minutes
    Current monitor: 0.84A / 4.81V

    Overall, I thought the battery performed pretty well. I keep it outside to recharge during the day, and use it to recharge my MP3 player during the night. I like getting “free” power.

    This is battery provided by Levin.
