Comfortably installed on their chair or sofa, players were able to see live the presentation of the PS4 Pro and its new capabilities. Only problem, it is still difficult to judge the real capabilities of the beast through a stream in the rarely impeccable quality, especially when it comes to estimate the sharpness of a 4K display … Through a conventional screen. We were there to assist in the aftermath of the conference, a series of presentations on the contribution of the PlayStation 4 Pro to titles like Mass Effect Andromeda , For Honor or Horizon Zero Dawn . The occasion was perfect to see with our own eyes the real contribution of this new hardware unveiled here on productions.
The cast was therefore rather behind the scenes, since it found both titles “first party” next – Horizon Zero Dawn, Days Gone – but also many publishers productions third – For Honor, Mass Effect Andromeda – and other games already available, with the image of inFAMOUS: First Light , Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor or Deus Ex: Divided Mankind .
“UM, IT’S DELICIOUS 4K”
Begin directly the tricky part: the use, true or not, the 4K. Sony has clearly emphasized during his lecture on the term 4K Ultra HD, which – without the “true” 4K – still implies a need for significant additional resources to offer games in 4K Ultra HD native. Specifically, the present developers have rarely been gracious about it, although some of them have readily admitted that it was an image in 1080p rescaled to reach a 4K : in this cases, the technical difference is thus seen elsewhere in the sharpness of the image, the resolution being artificially increased.
One exception, Horizon Zero Dawn, title to which developers have claimed that the picture was much available in 4K Ultra HD native , thus not duplicating the pixels from a lower resolution. The result was also particularly convincing on screen, Horizon is the most visually successful game – with Rise of the Tomb Raider and Uncharted 4 – among those presented. It can also rely on other advantages brought by the Pro PS4: accentuation of wind effects on vegetation and capillary movement of heroin on the side of most noticeable new features, but also made it more flashy visual certain electrical effects of mecha dinosaurs, which already has more to detail. Note also a constant among the games presented that does not escape the title of Guerrilla Games: increasing the depth of field .
MORE BEAUTIFUL, STRONGER … LATER?
This observation is therefore not only to Horizon but for plethora of other games presented here such as The Elder Scrolls Online, Mass Effect Andromeda, The Shadow of Mordor, Killing Floor 2 or Rise of the Tomb Raider. In the case of MMORPG drawn from the world of Elder Scrolls, the new hardware can compensate in part the technical weakness of the title on home consoles highlighting landscapes and various effects – lights, smoke – but not to raise the a stunning level. In Mass Effect, Shadow of Mordor or Tomb Raider, it offers especially the most aesthetically pleasing landscapes and refines the texture more distant plans, although the first city we have proposed a demo worthy too poor backgrounds of the name so that we can really realize the difference. More smart, developers Killing Floor 2 stressed the direct interest of a distance increased display on the gameplay of their protected, since ‘ such asset can detect enemies at a longer distance . Another asset of the game, its fluidity approaching the 60 fps, announced target developers who have entrusted us want to start the game with that level of fps to provide the best possible experience. Only this particular owes nothing to the Pro PS4 since the basic version will have a similar fluidity.
A FLUIDITY OF MATTER
What about the 60 fps? When asked about this, the members of the teams Guerrilla Games have highlighted the difficulty of moving a game already being developed to such a level of fluidity, without it having been thought upstream development. We also asked the question Masayasu Ito (Vice President of PlayStation Japan) who went in the direction of Guerrilla Games, with an opening hint on the future: If the 4K and HDR features are set before the group, nothing prevents developers to take advantage of the extra power of the console to offer a game in 1080p and 60 fps, rather than 4K Ultra HD 30 fps .
This is currently not the direction chosen by the developers into confidence, since ‘outside Killing Floor 2 single Rise of The Tomb Raider offers a framerate above 30 … As long as you choose from the menu of dedicated options to choose the flow at the expense of pure modeling . However, we found a significant decrease in framerate drops in favor of a 30 fps almost always stable on the proposed sessions, like a Mass Effect Andromeda whose decorations charge without the player noticing account during passage between two areas. Fabrice Condominas – Producer at BioWare Montreal – showed us the way, demo in support, it was possible to rotate the camera around the main character without fluidity is not to suffer. A small developer of pleasure which obviously will benefit the players with the title on the PS4 Pro.
So finally in the details that the PS4 Pro manages the most to affirm its differences . If the general will report on the best outdoor settings made of a Deus Ex Mankind Divided (finding that does not apply to his characters, unfortunately) or modeling finesse the already very successful hero of For Honor, presentations were mainly focused on the details of points: improving the rendering of light on nearby textures (inFamous: First light, Killing Floor 2), increased brightness electrical components (Mass Effect Andromeda, Horizon Zero Dawn), foliage style more realistic (the Shadow of Mordor) were regularly invited to the speech, eclipsing the strongest ideas such as native 4K or 60 fps. Note all the same, HDR forces, better color discrimination which in particular better identify elements in the dark areas of a Rise of the Tomb Raider and Mass Effect Andromeda , sometimes criticized for being too dark palette in some areas.
1080P, THE MINIMUM CONDITION IMPOSED BY SONY
It clearly will not expect a technical leap as the studios will be based on a simple upscale 1080p to 4K Ultra HD. Proof of the “youth” of equipment or simply reluctance of developers?Rather it would build on the first idea, devkits being that arrived earlier this year with a majority of studios willing to offer a PS4 Pro version of their app. Masayasu Ito with us, however, that the only real constraint attached developers is to develop games in 1080p, it is not assured that the productions in 4K abound on the PS4 Pro . The choice will be for studios and publishers and the first trends will be released in 2017, a pivotal year that will see the PS4 Pro to face the Nintendo NX and Scorpio Microsoft.
