Update:

As promised EA has released the first trailer for Star Wars: Battlefront, all of which is apparently in-game footage. There doesn’t seem to be any additional info, after the earlier leaks, but the repeated references to ‘aerial’ combat and taking to the skies reinforces the assumption that there won’t be any space battles.

The PlayStation logo at the start of the trailer likely implies some sort of Sony exclusive content, although it hasn’t been announced yet.

Original story:

You can play as Boba Fett and Darth Vader in EA’s new Star Wars game, as details of the The Force Awakens DLC are leaked.

The gameplay trailer isn’t due to be revealed until 6.30pm, but the Associated Press (AP) has accidentally posted their report on Star Wars: Battlefront early.

Although essentially a Star Wars version of Battlefield there will be some key differences, with the game only allowing for up to 40 players in a single match – instead of the usual 64.

Somewhat surprisingly there’s no story mode at all, although that may be an admission that the multiplayer-focused action just isn’t suited to storytelling – after criticism of previous Battlefield games, including the recent Battlefield Hardline.

According to a report on Eurogamer you’ll instead get ‘crafted missions’ that are played solo or with a friend via split screen or online co-op. Two-player co-op seems to be a key feature of the game, with both players able to share experience points and unlocks, and spawn at each other’s location.

The November 17 release date on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC was leaked earlier today, but apparently the UK released date will be the 20th. So, Friday instead of Tuesday.

The AP article describes a battle on Endor involving stormtroopers, speeder bikes, and an AT-AT, as well as a map set on the ice planet of Hoth. Those two locations have already been pictured before, but there’s also talk of the ‘lava-spewing’ planet of Sullust, which was mentioned in Return of the Jedi but never seen.

‘The game will reward sharpshooters with the ability to embody such iconic characters as bounty hunter Boba Fett and Sith baddie Darth Vader on the battlefield’, claims AP. This sounds like a mechanic similar to the earlier Battlefront games where success as an ordinary soldier gave you the chance to play as a named character for a while.

You’ll be able to customise your normal character with different weapons, gear, and abilities, but not the hero characters. You’ll also be able to switch between a first and third person view whenever you like.

Also described by AP are dogfights in TIE Fighters, X-wings, and the Millennium Falcon, with battles alternating between ground and air combat. There’s no specific mention of fighting in space though.

As has become clear in recent weeks the game focuses heavily on the original three movies, and it doesn’t sound like it ships with any content from new film The Force Awakens.

However, two weeks (or three weeks if you pre-order) before the film opens on December 18 there’ll be a free downloadable level set on the desert planet of Jakku that you can see in the teasers (no, it’s not Tatooine).

Even that won’t be based on the movie though, but instead will be set just after Return of the Jedi and explain why the planet is littered with crashed spaceships.

We’ll update this story later this evening, when the trailer is revealed.
