So I hadn’t played State of Decay until yesterday, when I bought it for my Xbox one. I had heard about it and wanted to try it, but figured I would wait for the updated version, so this is a review from someone who hasn’t played previously.

After I got home and installed it, I spent the next 4 hours glued to my TV. First of all, the game isn’t as pretty as I’ve come to expect from my One, but I knew that coming in. The graphics are servicable. But after you get past that, there’s quite a lot going on here. The world is very open, and ususally, if you see a building, you can go inside and check it out. There are also a decent variety of weapons, though I found melee was preferable to ranged weapons. We’ll see if that changes as I get furthur into the game.

The missions come quickly, and I didn’t find myself with much time to just wander around and do my own thing. From what I understand the missions have a time limit to complete, and if you don’t get there within a certain time, you can’t do those missions any longer. This is good in the sense that you always have things to do. Its bad in that I wanted to stop missions and just go scavenge supplies for my base.

The base is a pretty cool part of the game. It is your safezone, and you can use supplies you gather to improve it. You also store weapons here and get your allies to follow you on missions from here. I was just starting to upgrade my first base last night.

And thats the basics without trying to spoil too much. The game isn’t perfect, but I was having a blast playing, and thats what’s important. Definitley worth a try, especially if you don’t mind playing on 360 level graphics on your Xbox one. Look past that, and you’ll have a good time.

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: State of Decay- Year-One Survival Edition (Video Game)
So… I bought this game because I thought it would be a new gaming experience. And it is.

Here is what makes it different, and so great at the same time (PROS)
    1. Characters are more lifelike in that they get tired of running/killing zombies/etc.
    2. I actually started caring about characters
    3. Characters that die in the game do not come back (perma-death). This is great because if my character is running around I will avoid zombies when my energy is low and *hope* to make it home or to a car/etc. This gives you that scared feeling, that feeling that says don’t go that way! or don’t chance this! because once your character dies that’s it for that character. You lost a valuable asset and respawn in somebody else back at camp (as long as you have another controllable character)
    4. The world stays: What I mean is that if I drop a car off on the other side of the map, it will be in that same spot when I get back. If the car is significantly damaged (or on fire) it will still be like that when I return. It’s a little thing but appreciated.

Some things that I would like to see improved, but don’t ruin the game are:
    1. On rare occasions a zombie comes through a glitch wall. Ok, it’s rare and one zombie coming through is easily dealt with
    2. People in my crew disappear. I finish a mission and they disappear back to camp. mother F’ers. I could use their help getting back.
    3. The AI doesn’t close doors – Look. If you just ran away from some zombies I don’t want to welcome them into my home. Close that door!

Overall a great game so far. I would recommend this game to zombie fans, people who like slashing things to death, people who like the idea of building a community and people who want a new game experience.

    Have fun out there.
