I bought this to use with my Samsung Galaxy S4 (Android 4.4) and Adidas MiCoach. Getting it to work was pretty much painless. It didn’t pick up the heart beat well without the electrode gel (I use Spectra) until I started sweating. For my first few runs, it worked as perfectly as anyone could ask for.

Now the temperature and humidity are starting to get really bad here in the midwest (earlier than usual, sigh) so I’m sweating a whole lot, even at 5am. After a half a dozen workouts, the unit starting reading crazy heart rates after about 20min (sweating profusely by that point). At first I thought “maybe a dead battery” but my phone never lost the signal so the transmitter is still pumping out plenty of power. That also means that the signal isn’t being interfered with in any other way. I determined that the problem must be with the sensors and the humidity and all my sweating.

I eventually deduced that as electrolytes build up in the cloth part of the strap, they must be forming a weak conduction path between the sensors. I don’t know why that would make a difference but I figured it must be causing the issue. So before my next workout, I soaked the strap in warm distilled water to let the ions drain out (tap water probably won’t work since it is also has electrolytes in it). Notice, I said soak the STRAP not the transmitter. I.e., take the transmitter off. I soaked it for a half hour, then let it dry for an hour. I put it on for a 58min run and it worked perfectly the entire workout. Then the very next workout it started with the erratic heart rates around the 23min mark.

So the flaw is this: the strap is forming a conduction path across the electrodes.

Solution 1: Soak in distilled warm (not hot) water before or after every workout

Solution 2: Cut the strap under the transmitter. This would break the conduction path permanently. I HAVE NOT TRIED THIS so I can’t tell you if it is a good idea or not. Two potential problems are this: 1) Sweat may get into the transmitter from having an open air gap directly to your skin or 2) the buttons may not hold the sides together.

Solution 3: Find another strap where there is no cloth material between the electrodes. I have seen one strap like that but I can’t remember who makes it. This is probably what I will do because the transmitter part of this product really is good. It’s the sensors that are flawed in design (You’re welcome, Jarv).

Overall, it takes very little effort to soak the strap in distilled water. I might try the strap modification (cut), not sure yet. Transmitter works great, almost never a loss of signal.

Four stars are for working great most of the time. I like this unit and would like to keep using it if I can modify the existing strap or find another strap that works better. I can keep soaking it in distilled water though and it will work for at least one full workout.

UPDATE: The old style Garmin strap should HYPOTHETICALLY solve the problem with too much sweat:

I purchased this product 8 weeks ago and only used it for less than 2 months. It worked good and connect to my cellular phone (Moto X, Digifit) when I first used it. After few weeks my cellular phone had problem to detect the device. I changed the battery, but it still doesn’t work because my phone can not detect the device at all. I even restarted my phone and rinse the belt again, but it still doesn’t work. Now this device is totally dead! I tried to return the product to Amazon, but it was rejected because it has been more than one month after I purchased it. I tried to contact the seller and manufacturer for this problem, hopefully they will either fix or replace it for me. Keep my finger crossed.

It has been two days since I contacted the seller and manufacturer by emails for RMA, but I still haven’t heard from any of them. I am very disappointed not just because of the quality of the products, but also their service to support customers. I would strongly suggest you not to purchase this products due to terrible quality and customer service.

    Update on 09/26/2014
I tried to reach their customer service again by email in last weekend, and I got response on this Monday. I am not sure if I am lucky this time, or my last claim email was overlooked. In the email their customer service rep is very nice by offering replacement without requesting me to ship back the defective one claimed. I received a new HRM yesterday and tested it by pairing to my phone. It works perfectly. This is the reason why I upgrade the rating from 1 star to 4 stars because of their excellent customer service, I will use the new HRM and update my experience if there should be future quality problem.
